Message for Parents and Educators

The Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services(IVRS) offers various employment options for all people with disabilities, including employment and training options for the young person with a special need. IVRS encourages parents and educators to refer students for services. IVRS serves both students in school and young or adult persons who have left the school system.

  • A IVRS counselor is assigned to every high school in Iowa.
  • A parent or student can contact IVRS directly for services.
  • IVRS will work with a school team to help plan for a student's future.

IVRS serves individuals with a wide variety of significant disabilities.

Examples include:

  • diabetes
  • asthma
  • learning disabilities
  • hearing impairments
  • mental illness
  • spinal cord injuries
  • developmental disabilities
  • orthopedic disabilities
  • other

Your local IVRS office will determine eligibility.

Post-Secondary Services

For the young person with a disability planning to go on to or already enrolled in post-secondary education:

  • College planning
  • College tuition (Tuition assistance is provided on the basis of financial need.)
  • Vocational training
  • Personal living skills
  • Career assessment
  • Career counseling
  • Job placement
  • Assistive technology

Supported Employment Services

For the young person with a disability needing more intensive support to gain, retain, or prepare for employment:

  • Vocational assessment
  • Supported employment
  • Work adjustment
  • Community-based assessment
  • Job coaching
  • Important skill information
  • Referral to community programs

Direct Employment Services

For the young person with a disability who needs some assistance when moving into the world of work or in retaining a job:

  • On-the-job training
  • Job seeking skills training
  • Job placement
  • Resume preparation
  • Assistance with independent living
  • Short-term job coaching
  • Counseling and guidance
