To qualify for college accommodations students must have a disability as defined by the
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

Academic Support

Most colleges offer tutoring, learning strategies, writing labs and assistive technology

Academic advisors will assist with registration and can help students select a major

Trio

Trio provides academic support to qualified students based on federal income guidelines, first generation or persons with disabling conditions

Check with specific school to see what other support services my be available

Career Center

Can help students discover potential employment directions particular to their major

Hosts career fairs

Helps students with resumes, cover letters and interviewing skills

Assists students to set up internships

May provide interviewing opportunities and job leads

  • Know your disability and be able to discuss your needs.
  • Meet with the Disability Support Services Department to review any documentation you may need to receive reasonable accommodations while in school.
  • Try out any accommodation technology prior to the start of school.
  • Tour housing and academic facilities to assure accessibility issues are addressed.
  • Meet with any necessary medical support services providers.
  • Review your class schedule with the Disability Support Services Department to assure accommodations are in place.
  • Share knowledge of what accommodations have been successful.
  • Make accommodation requests early as the school will need time to process your request.

Share mobility issues with Disability Services Office:

  • Do you need an accessible dorm?
  • Do you need a special diet?
  • Do you have medication needs?
  • Do you need arrangements for handicapped parking?
Accommodations of personal leave assistance should be discussed with your IVRS Counselor.
Assistive Technology

If you need further assistance with Assistive Technology, contact your IVRS Counselor to see if Assistive Technology would benefit you.

Check with the school to see what Assistive Technology is offered (screen reader, voice activated software, etc.)
