IVRS Career DescriptionsRehabilitation
Counselor Brief Description of Duties: Provides counseling and comprehensive rehabilitation services which include the design and implementation of individualized Rehabilitation programs to assist physically and mentally disabled citizens in finding and retaining suitable employment. Education and Experience Requirements: Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling, counseling and guidance, or a closely related major emphasis; OR graduation from an accredited college or university with a major emphasis in human service-oriented sciences which provide a knowledge of the theories, principles, and techniques of counseling, and 24 hours or more of graduate work in counseling and the equivalent of one year of full-time experience performing professional vocational rehabilitation counseling services. Some positions require fluency in American Sign Language. Rehabilitation
Associate Brief Description of Duties: Provides assistance to rehabilitation counselors in determining eligibility for VR services. Also assists in determining counseling, assessment, vocational guidance, and job placement to assist individuals with disabilities to reach their employment goals. Education and Experience Requirements: Graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a human services related area; or An equivalent combination of education and experience substituting full-time human service work experience for the required education (thirty semester or equivalent hours equals one year) to a maximum substitution of two years. For designated positions, the hiring authority may require specialized experience, licensure or specific coursework in one or more of the following areas: Fluency in American Sign Language and/or 12 hours (undergraduate or graduate) or six months experience in recreation/leisure services. Rehabilitation Assistant Brief Description of Duties: Assists rehabilitation counselors with potential clients with initial intakes, case coordination/management and readiness for employment.. Education and Experience Requirements:
Two years of office or administrative support experience
that involved: customer service; contact with the public
to either compile or provide information regarding services;
organizing and/or managing confidential information;
scheduling/following up on appointments; legal assistant/secretary;
OR, medical office assistant;or substitution of up to
60 semester hours (or equivalent) hours of college course
work for the required experience (30 semester hours
= one year); or employees with at least 18 months of
full time or equivalent clerical or administrative support
experience in a state agency will qualify. Keyboard/typing
skill at the rate of 40 words per minute, minimum Disability
Examiner $37,752.00 - $56,118.40 per year Brief description of duties: Evaluates initial and reconsideration claim for disability benefits under the Social Security and Supplemental Security Income programs, determines eligibility according to Social Security regulations, policies and procedures. Education and Experience requirements: Graduation from an accredited four year college or university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year of experience in the review and determination of financial eligibility for categorical public assistance programs, vocational counseling, registered nursing, disability determination, social work or other closely related work for each year of the above required education up to a maximum of four years. Paid Internships Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services (IVRS) has frequent openings for Rehabilitation Counselor. If you are a graduate student in a Rehabilitation Counseling program and looking for an Internship site, you may be qualified for employment with the Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services if you meet the following criteria:
If selected for an open position, you can complete your internship as a full-time IVRS Employee. Salary range is $39,540.80—$59,051.20 annually. These positions are exempt from the merit system provisions and are located in major communities throughout Iowa.
